Miami Dolphins interview Bears’ Dave Toub for head coaching position
Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub, Wednesday’s interviewee for the vacant Dolphins head coaching position, got the same the helicopter ride to and from the Dolphins’ Davie offices that former Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher received Tuesday.
As the Dolphins confirmed Toub’s interview, Fisher headed to interview in St. Louis, where the director of football operations is Kevin Demoff, son of Fisher’s longtime agent Marvin Demoff. St. Louis also has an established young quarterback in Sam Bradford; an empty general manager space Fisher could influence the filling of; the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft; and, after next season, generous salary cap space.
Also apparently generous will be the financial lengths the Dolphins will be willing to go to get Fisher. One source told The Herald the Dolphins refuse to be outdone in the money department when it comes to wooing Fisher.
Fisher is one of four former Super Bowl coaches available. Of the other three — Bill Cowher, John Gruden and Brian Billick — the Dolphins have shown the least interest in Billick.
Billick compiled an 85-67 record with a Super Bowl win in nine seasons in Baltimore before being fired after the 2007 season. His winning percentage (.559) and hardware exceeds Fisher’s (.538, lost only Super Bowl appearance). But Billick, working on NFL Network and as a color analyst on Fox Network games, does not seem to be part of the Dolphins’ search yet.
An NFL source told The Herald that the Dolphins have made only indirect contact with Billick once. Another source said flatly Billick wasn’t part of the Dolphins’ plans.
A Dolphins source said the success in Baltimore of Billick’s successor, first-time NFL head coach John Harbaugh, after being Philadelphia’s special teams coach for nine years prompted the interest in Toub. Toub was Philadelphia’s special teams and quality control coach for three years under Harbaugh before going to Chicago in 2004.
Harbaugh just needed to get Baltimore’s vaunted defense, including future Hall of Famers Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, healthy and he benefitted from getting quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice in the 2008 Draft. It also didn’t hurt Harbaugh that Cam Cameron, fired by the Dolphins after the 1-15 2007 season became Baltimore’s offensive coordinator.
All that has helped propel Harbaugh to a 48-23 playoff and regular-season record in four seasons with the Ravens.
